Answers on a Postcard Please is a participatory Artful Way which Claire Webzell and Stefan Escreet will be doing on Wednesday 7th July. The route is the very popular 10-mile circular walk around Derwentwater.
They will set out with a stock of blank postcards, drawing and writing implements. At various points on the route they will set up a ‘making table’ and invite members of the public passing by to respond to Artful Ways with just three lines.
- They can be graphic lines or written lines
- Drawings or short pieces of writing
- On a postcard
These are quick and accessible creative activities to respond to where we are in that moment. An invitation to take a brief pause on their way, take pleasure in making something and have the excitement that their work might be part of the Artful Ways exhibition. Participants can put their name on their work or submit it anonymously.
The three Artful Ways questions will be on display to spark responses and conversation. This is an artistic intervention to surprise and delight members of the public, to encourage them to enjoy their own creative expression and think afresh about the place they have chosen to walk in. There’s great pleasure in filling the tiny canvas of a postcard. And added pleasure in sharing it with someone else in another place.
Claire and Stefan will be busy filling in their own postcards during the times between meeting passersby. They’d like to create a ‘dotted line’ of postcards winding its way like a footpath marked on an OS map and finishing where it starts to reflect the circular walk that inspired these tiny works of art.
They hope to spread the word about the Artful Ways project and the final exhibition. They would be delighted if other creatives can join them and contribute postcards as well as members of the public – so if you’re in the area, stop by and see what you can create!
Claire and Stefan will be walking clockwise from Keswick and aim to be in three accessible spots at certain times for those that can’t make the full 10 mile walk. They’ll stick to the main footpath all the way and will have an Artful Way sign, keep your eyes peeled!
