Jo Kieft

Jo was inspired to make this mask after doing a ‘fire walk’ … walking over hot coals. The walk took place at Moorforge Viking Settlement discovery centre near Gilcrux in north Cumbria, between the National Park and the Solway coast. The centre is being developed and focuses on life here in the 10th century.

Answering the three Artful questions

What does creativity/culture mean to me?

I consider creativity an element of my self-care. I consider culture as adding richness to my life.

Covid-19 has forced us all to reimagine ways to connect. What have you missed – and what new possibilities have opened up?

I missed not being able to see my children and grandchildren as much as I would have liked. The possibility of making connections with people, without meeting in person, has been opened up to me and I have realised that these connections can be more beneficial and rewarding than I would ever have thought.

How can we, collectively, and artfully, better care for our environment?

Collectively – I think, by focusing less on difference/division and more on similarities/collaboration.

Artfully – I think by enhancing feelings of connection.
