For the last outing of the Artful Ways exhibition, 2D works will be on show in the cafe at Sizergh Barn. Open Daily, 9am – 5pm.


Workshop: Making a Pair of Map Shoes at Florence Arts Centre, June 11, 2022 .

In this afternoon workshop, artist Alex Jakob Whitworth will guide participants in the making of tiny shoes out of maps, building in stories of journeying as they go. Thanks to the Family Arts Network for additional funding to make this possible. The family friendly workshop is free but you’ll need to book!

Workshop: Making Signs for Bees at Florence Arts Centre, June 11, 2022 .

Join commissioned artist Alex Jakob Whitworth to make signs for bees in this free workshop (with thanks to the Family Arts Network for additional funding to make this possible). The workshop will build on the work Alex did in response to the submissions to Artful Ways through last summer, and ties in with the theme of pollinators (with Cumbria Wildlife Trust also running events at Florence House) and the bee painting that’s on show as part of the Artful Ways exhibition, by Ambitious Melon.

Guided Walks: EskFest in Eskdale

Artful Ways at Esk Fest in the beautiful Eskdale Valley. We’ll be there with a tent, so come and chat with us PLUS we’ll be leading a walk with a creative twist on Friday and Saturday mornings (starting 10am). One will be uphill and ‘wild’; the other is a very leisurely low-level stroll.

Group Walk: The Poetry Path, Kirkby Stephen

Kirkby Stephen & a Dawdle along the Poetry Path. The Dawdles walking group will be meeting to wander, taking extra time to stop and admire twelve individual stones engraved with Meg Peacock’s poetry, which follows the farmers’ year with poems written to reflect sense of place. Anne Sandell will be co-ordinating this event and will be inspiring people to get creative! Suggestions might include your poem inspired by the stones or landscape, a photograph or drawing, or you may simply do a crayon rubbing from the stones. Poetry Dawdle details

Meet at the Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen, 1030am.

We will go whatever the weather – please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the day – we will adapt walks when essential. — All walks should take about an hour unless otherwise stated – DAWDLES Walk ‘Little extra/Extra’ are longer and are taken at a quicker pace. — Where there is a car share, allow for extra time to reach destinations and return. We usually find optional refreshments.

Event – Answers on a Postcard Please: Derwentwater

Answers on a Postcard Please is a participatory Artful Way with Claire Webzell and Stefan Escreet. The route is the very popular 10-mile circular walk around Derwentwater. They will set out with a stock of blank postcards, drawing and writing implements.  At various points on the route they will set up a ‘making table’ and invite members of the public passing by to respond to Artful Ways. Dance Session: Carlisle

Multicultural Cumbria have partnered with Artful Ways to develop Dance Carousel sessions which are open to all ladies to take part in. The events are on 11th and 18th July, at 12-2pm the University of Cumbria’s Brampton Road campus.  Everyone will be encouraged to play with ideas and collaborate to create a unique piece of choreography and there will be the chance to be part of a film of the event which will be submitted to the Artful Ways touring exhibition. Florence Arts Centre are helping you get moving with some guided walks through both town and countryside as part of The Artful Ways project, on Wednesdays to Sundays (11am until 4pm) from 14th-25th July. Group Walk: Lady Anne’s Way – Aisgill to Outhgill, Mallerstang

A walk being held by the Dawdles group in Kirkby Stephen. Follow Lady Anne’s Way downhill through Mallerstang valley past Hellgill Force, surrounded by Mallerstang Edge and Wildboar Fell with spectacular views, approximately 3.5 miles – taking in the Watercut statue by Mary Bourne, the first of the Eden Benchmarks and, Andy Goldsworthy Outhgill Pinfold Cone plus the replica Jew Stone.
